Meet the UUC Board
2010–2011

Officers of the Board

President Stephanie Gilmore: After 30 years in public health program and policy development in CA and MO, Stephanie retired to be near her son and his family. Previously, she served on the Board of Trustees of the First Unitarian Church of Oakland. Now, she is President of the UUC, a volunteer for the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, and a happy resident of the Shadowlake Village community.

Past President Darla Bray: Darla has served as UUC President, RE teacher and RE Committee member, and is a member of Womenspirit which deepens her connection and sense of responsibility to the earth and the web of life. Previously, a sales and marketing manager in Indianapolis, IN, Darla retired and, with husband, Richard, relocated to the NRV. An activist for reproductive rights, pay equity, environmental concerns and social justice, she also enjoys time with family, hiking, canoeing, sailing, traveling, reading, and crafts.

President Elect: Darrel Clowes: A man of contrasts, he is a New Englander who has lived and worked in the South most of his adult life. He served in the U.S. Navy preparing to fly over Korea, and ten years later served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Korea. His professional life involved teaching, researching and writing about community colleges and higher education - mostly at Virginia Tech. His life in retirement has involved an uneasy blend of travel, skiing and family with community involvement from the Blacksburg Sports Club to the Red Cross and this Congregation.

Treasurer, Linda Powers: Is an instructor at VirginiaTech in the Math Dept, geocaches and has an organic vegetable garden and apple trees.

Board members at large

Susan Coleman: Is a retired chemist turned fanatic soap maker, now turning retired soap maker and fanatic grandmother to new twins (which now make 10!). She's married to her best friend and says she is "shy and retiring."

Crosby Houston: A member of the Congregation since 1993, was RE Coordinator and Co-President, each for three years. He retired from the Air Force, with all tours being in education and training.  He has also taught at NRCC. Crosby has visited/lived in a number of different countries.

Scott Myers: Scott Myers, a 1975 VA Tech Graduate, lives in Newport and enjoys helping the UUC in their various construction projects. After being the owner's rep for the large UUC building expansion, he is helping coordinate the Memorial Garden Project.

Jim Copenhaver: Most recently lived in western New York State, where he lived for 40 years, 30 of which involved teaching physics at the SUNY College of Technology at Alfred, NY. Having been UUs in New York for 40 years, Jim and his wife, Pauletta, became part of this Congregation two years ago. They have two grown daughters, one of whom lives in Blacksburg.
